2014 - 2015 PRE-HEALTH OPPORTUNITIES2015 Summer Programs
For a good list of summer pre-health programs that span across the country: http://people.rit.edu/~gtfsbi/Symp/mcoop.htm Summer Opportunities Presentation (from the Nov. 5th meeting) here UNC MED PROGRAM
The Medical Education Development (MED) Program is designed to increase opportunities in the health professions for individuals who demonstrate educational promise and commitment to a health career but who have lacked the opportunity in the past in moving toward their professional goals. It is sponsored by the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, Health Careers Opportunities Programs (Division of Disadvantaged Assistance, Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources Administration) and the State of North Carolina. The program offers a structured summer curriculum at the level of professional education to increase the ability of advanced pre-professional candidates, especially those who are disadvantaged, to compete successfully for admission to health professional schools. DEADLINE: January 20, 2015 at 4 pm UNC SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Each summer, the Science Enrichment Preparation (S.E.P.) Program welcomes 50 talented undergraduate rising sophomores and rising juniors, interested in any health profession, to the beautiful campus of UNC Chapel Hill. These diverse students from under-represented, first generation, rural, and/or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds will engage in an 8-week summer experience that will change their lives. Most S.E.P. scholars ultimately gain admission into the graduate and health professional programs of their choice. S.E.P. allows selected applicants to take advantage of life-changing opportunities that include:
SMART Summer Research Program
The overall goals of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented minority students who earn degrees in STEM disciplines, pursue graduate study, and become faculty and/or researchers in their chosen field. The program will include two major components. First, the students will spend nine weeks during the summer doing 30 hours of research per week under the mentoring of a lab member (i.e. co-mentor) and the principle investigator of the lab (i.e. research advisor). Second, students will attend weekly meetings with their peers and with with me, serving as the program director. During those meetings they will review scientific papers, present their research, and gain additional research-related skills. We will also have field trips to research facilities off campus. The program expects to make 9 stipend awards of $3,000 each. Deadline: Application should be submitted to Dr. Gidi Shemer ([email protected]) before 8 a.m., Monday, February 16, 2015. Finalists will be invited to an interview. If you plan to apply to the program, please let Dr. Shemer know about your plans sooner rather than later. You are by no way committed to apply, but this will help him estimate the number of applicants and plan accordingly. UNC*F MERCK SCIENCE INITIATIVE

2013 Summer Programs!
Summer in Biomedical Sciences (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program
This summer, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is sponsoring an eight week program in which selected undergraduate students will conduct laboratory research under the guidance of individual UAB faculty members.
Student recipients of this competitive fellowship receive a stipend of $2000 for the summer. Students will receive free on-campus housing but will be responsible for their own meals, travel to and from Birmingham, and other expenses. We expect applicants to SIBS to have completed at least their sophomore year of undergraduate coursework. We anticipate that successful candidates will typically demonstrate grade point averages of 3.0 (“B”) or higher, especially in science, math, and related areas. Our goal in offering this fellowship is to give talented students the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of intensive, hypothesis-drive laboratory research. This experience should help students make well informed decisions about future career plans. Previous research experience is not required. We especially welcome applications from students who are interested in research as a potential career, including students interested in PhD and MD/PhD programs. Program Dates: June 3– July 26, 2013 Deadline: February 15, 2013 Apply Now!: www.uab.edu/sibs Director's Email: Dr. Robert Lorenz [email protected] |
